“He Wore the Uniform… Then Pulled the Trigger” — Off-Duty Cop Kills Two Women community left in shock

South Africans woke up to another horrifying tragedy on Friday, 18 July 2025, after a Gqeberha police officer allegedly shot and killed two women before turning the gun on himself. The shocking incident unfolded around 09:30 at a flat on Gordon Terrace, Central Gqeberha, sending ripples of grief and fear through the community.

According to a statement from SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, police responded swiftly to the scene, only to find three lifeless bodies — two women and the alleged shooter, a 32-year-old off-duty constable stationed at Algoa Park SAPS.

At this stage, authorities believe the constable opened fire on the women before taking his own life. The motive? Still unknown.

Names of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Police have launched a full investigation, but answers are few, and heartbreak is everywhere.

And as if one tragedy wasn’t enough, just two days earlier, Gqeberha was rocked by another gruesome discovery — the body of a 12-year-old girl was found dumped in a bushy area in Bethelsdorp.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, who confirmed the child’s death, said officers responded to the scene around 12:45 on Wednesday, 16 July. The young girl had visible injuries, but the exact cause of death is still unknown and will be determined through a postmortem. No suspects have been arrested, and the motive remains a mystery.

For many residents, the violence feels relentless — and frighteningly close to home. When the people who are meant to protect start pulling the trigger, where do we turn for safety?

The dual tragedies raise difficult but necessary questions about mental health among law enforcement, gender-based violence, and the deepening crisis of child safety in South Africa.
