“I Just Want to Feel Normal Again”: Man's Life-Altering Keloid Sparks Nationwide Appeal
In the quiet village of Manoke near Burgersfort, 43-year-old Petros Malepe is facing a silent battle that has consumed not only his body but his spirit. For years, Petros has lived with a massive keloid—a severe overgrowth of scar tissue—that stretches across his upper body, leaving him in constant physical pain and emotional distress.
But now, as Mandela Day shines a light on giving and compassion, Petros is making a heartfelt appeal to the nation: “Help me live a normal life.”
Petros needs R70,000 for urgent surgery and treatment at a private medical facility. The cost will cover surgery, radiation therapy, medication, blood tests, psychological support, theatre fees, and more. The keloid, which has grown extensively, is not only a source of discomfort but a daily reminder of his isolation and fading self-esteem.
His story reached Dr ES Kgoete, a dedicated physician who responded after Petros messaged him via social media. Touched by Petros’s humility and desperation, Dr Kgoete took action. He’s now spearheading a donation campaign in honour of Madiba’s legacy, determined to give Petros the life he deserves.
“I’m 100% willing to cut his keloid,” Dr Kgoete said, half-jokingly but with serious intention. “He deserves relief and a fresh start.”
South Africans from all walks of life are being asked to lend a hand, whether by sharing the story, donating, or simply spreading kindness. It’s a moment to act with Ubuntu—because restoring Petros’s life isn’t just about removing a scar. It’s about giving a man the chance to walk freely without being stared at, to wear a shirt without pain, to look in the mirror without shame.
To contribute towards the campaign, donations can be made via the BackaBuddy platform here or through Capitec Savings Account: 1513874703.
