Rand Water Shuts Down ARV Rumours: “Our Water Is Safe, Clean, and Monitored”

Rand Water has moved swiftly to put out the flames of a viral rumour that left many South Africans concerned: claims that antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) had been detected in the country’s drinking water.

On Thursday, 17 July, the bulk water supplier issued a firm statement dismissing these reports, assuring the public that the water from their treatment systems—especially that sourced from the Vaal Dam—is clean and ARV-free.

“Rand Water has not detected ARVs at the point of abstraction in the Vaal Dam and, consequently, in any of its treated final drinking water,” the utility said in its official statement.

These concerns appeared to stem from confusion between findings in natural water bodies and treated drinking water. While trace levels of pharmaceuticals, including ARVs, have in the past been found downstream of wastewater plants, none have been detected in the water supplied by Rand Water to households and businesses.

Speaking on behalf of Rand Water, spokesperson Makenosi Maroo reassured the public that the organisation is deeply committed to safety and quality.

“Our drinking water is safe, and we continuously monitor and maintain the highest quality standards. We urge the public and media to verify such sensitive information with us before spreading unnecessary alarm,” she said.

Rand Water emphasized that it’s actively involved in national research initiatives, working alongside universities and scientific institutions to study and monitor contaminants in South Africa’s water sources. This includes a sharp focus on emerging threats in water ecosystems—ensuring early detection and accurate data sharing with the public.

For residents who may have been alarmed by the original rumours, the message is clear: the water coming from your taps is safe to drink.
