Smartphones at R67? Vodacom Makes Digital History in Mandela Month

In a move that could redefine digital access for millions, Vodacom is celebrating Mandela Month by offering select prepaid customers the opportunity to upgrade to a 4G Kicka 6 smartphone for just R67.

Yes, you read that right — R67.

The special offer is currently being rolled out in KwaZulu-Natal, with plans to expand to Mpumalanga and Limpopo in the coming weeks. The initiative forms part of Vodacom’s 2025 Mandela Month campaign, themed: “It is in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”

According to Vodacom South Africa’s Consumer Business Director, Rishaad Tayob, the campaign targets customers still using outdated 2G devices, which severely limit access to modern services — from banking to job hunting, health info to social connection.

“By offering affordable 4G smartphones, we are empowering people to participate fully in the digital economy,” said Tayob.

The Kicka 6, which usually retails at R699, is now available at a massive discount of R632 — a price drop symbolic of Madiba’s 67 years of fighting for freedom and justice. But it gets even better: anyone who recharges with R29 or more will receive a bonus 20GB Buy and Get bundle, valued at R149.

While the offer is limited to qualifying prepaid users and select regions for now, it's part of a broader push to bridge South Africa’s digital divide — one affordable handset at a time.

Whether it’s for school learners, jobseekers, or elderly users needing easier communication, this may just be the kind of initiative that transforms lives long after Mandela Month ends.
