Three men gunned down in the Neighbourhood

It was just after 10pm on Wednesday night, 17 July, when the quiet of Ntlazane Road in Khayelitsha was shattered by the sound of gunfire. By the time police arrived, three men lay dead — victims of a brutal and calculated shooting that has once again raised fears about the growing wave of violence gripping the area.

The three victims, aged 29, 30, and 43, were found with multiple gunshot wounds. According to police spokesman Colonel André Traut, officers from SAPS were alerted to the scene in Harare and immediately launched a murder investigation.

While the motive for the killings hasn’t been officially confirmed, residents say they’ve seen this pattern before. One resident, who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons, believes the killings may be linked to an ongoing turf war between extortion gangs. These groups allegedly demand protection fees from local spaza shop owners — and disputes over territory and payments often turn violent.

“These shootings have been happening for three days now,” the resident explained. “People are saying it could be a disagreement over who collects the money on the 15th. That’s usually the day gangs go around demanding their protection fees.”

The idea that communities are caught in the crossfire of criminal rivalries is not new — but what’s deeply concerning is how often it’s happening. With no arrests yet made, fear continues to ripple across Khayelitsha, where residents are growing tired of living in a constant state of fear.

Colonel Traut confirmed that detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have taken over the case and are actively pursuing leads to track down the perpetrators. But for now, no suspects have been arrested.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to step forward — either by contacting CrimeStop on 08600 10111 or submitting tips via the MySAPS mobile app. All details will be handled confidentially, and those providing tips can remain anonymous.

As the community mourns the lives lost, the sense of urgency to end the bloodshed has only grown stronger.

“We can’t live like this,” said one resident. “Every week, someone is killed. And no one gets caught.”
