FlySafair passengers woke up to chaos on Tuesday, July 22, as the airline announced more sudden flight cancellations, leaving travellers stranded in airports across the country. Behind the confusion? A rapidly intensifying pay dispute between FlySafair management and its pilots, who have officially downed tools.
The disruption, now on day two, comes after hundreds of pilots, backed by the Solidarity union, walked out over wage disagreements. They're demanding a 10.5% salary increase, nearly double the 5.7% offer currently on the table from FlySafair. With no deal in sight, flight delays and cancellations are now stretching into the peak travel season, leaving families, business travellers, and tourists in the lurch.
For South Africans hoping to escape winter blues or reach urgent destinations, the timing couldn’t be worse.
“It’s like we’re being held hostage,” said one Durban-bound passenger. “First we were told the flight’s delayed, then cancelled—no proper updates, no alternatives. Just chaos.”
The airline, for its part, issued an apology to customers, noting on Twitter that they are “doing everything possible to minimise disruptions.” Flights FA 327 and FA 326 scheduled for Tuesday were officially cancelled, with more likely to follow unless negotiations shift. Affected customers were urged to stay updated via FlySafair’s official communication channels or check the website.

According to sources within Solidarity, pilots have been overworked and underpaid for years, operating on “unsustainable schedules” with little to no compensation for overtime and fatigue-related risks.
But FlySafair has pushed back, stating the pilots’ demands are unrealistic given the current economic strain affecting the aviation industry. “Our offer reflects the market and economic pressures all airlines are currently facing,” said a spokesperson.
That may not be enough. Passengers aren’t the only ones angry. Insiders say morale among crew members is at an all-time low, and mediation efforts—now involving the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)—have yet to bear fruit.
“It’s no longer just about money,” one pilot shared anonymously. “It’s about safety, exhaustion, dignity, and being treated as more than just a seat number.”
With no end in sight, South African air travel could be facing a rough week ahead. Industry analysts say prolonged strike action could spill into other airlines, creating a ripple effect during one of the year’s busiest domestic travel windows. Already, whispers of sympathetic action are circulating in airport lounges and union channels.
And it’s not just personal holidays at stake. Tourism, logistics, and small businesses that rely on rapid movement of goods and people are likely to feel the punch next. The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has warned that ongoing inaction could create a “transport bottleneck with economic consequences far beyond ticket sales.”

For now, FlySafair has vowed to continue operations where possible, rerouting passengers and offering vouchers where refunds aren’t available. But with each passing day, their public image takes another hit—and so does travel confidence across the country.
