In a plot twist fit for a crime thriller, a now-disbanded police task team allegedly tried to arrest Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya—just a month before Mchunu ordered the team shut down.
According to City Press sources, the unit, known for investigating political killings, quietly attempted to secure arrest warrants in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, targeting Mchunu and Sibiya. However, prosecutors reportedly kicked back the request, citing a lack of sufficient evidence.
The unit’s closure in December 2024 sparked immediate backlash, especially from KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Mchunu and other top officials of having ties to criminal syndicates and interfering in high-level investigations. Mchunu denies the claims, and a judicial commission of inquiry is now underway.
Both Mchunu and Sibiya have been placed on special leave, but critics fear Mchunu’s presence could still influence internal investigations—a concern amplified by ongoing tensions inside the SAPS and the ANC’s role in policing appointments.
In a defiant weekend address, Mchunu defended ANC-backed generals, suggesting that their rise to leadership was won “through blood and sweat” and urging them not to trample on their opportunity.
Meanwhile, Mchunu hit back at the idea of politically motivated probes, warning South Africans against allowing anyone to act as “accuser, investigator, and judge”.
“That would be the end of all of us in the country,” he said.
President Ramaphosa has faced criticism over his handling of the matter, with the MK Party even taking the issue to ConCourt, demanding Mchunu’s outright dismissal. But Ramaphosa insists that due process must prevail, stressing that the commission will be fair, independent, and credible.
Parliament’s legal advisor Andile Tetyana confirmed that Mchunu has no immunity and can still be charged if the commission uncovers criminal conduct.
🚨 Is this political clean-up or a cover-up?
