Snow, Thunderstorms, and Sunburn? SA’s Winter Weather Turns Wild This Monday
South Africa is bracing for a weather rollercoaster today, Monday 20 July 2025, with rain, thunderstorms, snow, and even sunburn risks—depending on where you live. Despite the dramatic mix, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) assures no severe weather warnings have been issued.
Here’s what you need to know about the conditions sweeping across all nine provinces:
Gauteng: Expect a cool, partly cloudy day after a clear start—sun protection still needed as the UVB index is moderate.
Mpumalanga & Limpopo: Starting fine, then cooling down as clouds roll in. Lowveld regions will feel warmer, offering some winter relief. Northeastern Limpopo might see light drizzle.
North West & Free State: Windy, cool, and cloudy skies. The Free State’s far west could see isolated thundershowers.
Northern Cape: From cloudy mornings along the coast to partly cloudy afternoons, expect windy and cool conditions with scattered showers inland. Warmer weather will sneak into the north.
Western Cape: A wet and cold start, especially in the extreme southwest. Light rain will spread across the south coast by afternoon. Winds will shift from light to moderate southerly.
Eastern Cape: Weather here splits dramatically. The west will see scattered showers, with cold and cloudy skies across much of the province. Snow is expected tonight over the northeastern high ground.
KwaZulu-Natal: The day begins with fog patches in the north, then clears to fine and cool weather inland, while the south braces for isolated thunderstorms. Despite the chill, UVB levels in KZN will be very high, so don’t ditch the sunscreen.
No national weather alerts have been issued, as none of today’s conditions are expected to reach dangerous thresholds—however, be prepared for local disruptions due to wind, wet roads, or poor visibility in fog-prone and snow-affected areas.
