A chill runs through Pretoria. Four women found dead in just over a month. Three brutally burned bodies discovered near train stations in Silvertondale. The fourth found half-buried in Eersterust. South African Police Service confirms a dedicated task team is now working around the clock to decide: is this a serial killer on the loose?
Between June and July, three badly burned female bodies were found strewn along the railway line between Watloo and Denneboom stations in Silvertondale. Then on Thursday, 31 July, a community member in Eersterust discovered a partially buried body—with one hand visible above ground—of a 30-year-old woman reported missing from Sunnyside on 4 July. Crime intelligence, forensics, experienced detectives are deep into the investigation.(The Citizen, African Insider)
Such frequency and method have raised alarm bells. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili didn’t rule anything out. "We are probing a possible linkage between the cases," she confirmed. The task force includes seasoned detectives, crime intelligence, forensic service specialists, and crime scene experts.(SAPS)
Hours later, a breakthrough. In a joint operation by Limpopo Tracking Team, Silverton Detectives, Tshwane FCS, and Tshwane District Detectives, authorities arrested a 36‑year‑old man in Polokwane at 2 AM on 4 August. He is expected in court on 6 August to face murder charges for the Eersterust killing—where the body was found in a field on Swartberg Street.(SAPS)
The same man is linked to over ten cases of rape and murder, many involving Tinder-based dating lures to Eersterust residences. One woman’s body was buried in a shallow grave there, with burial reportedly taking place next to his home. The arrest officer credited tip-offs and coordinated operations across provinces.(The Citizen)
It’s not just isolated tragedies—it’s a pattern. The Citizen ran a story titled “Serial killer fear grips Pretoria as 5th woman’s body found”, pointing to similar burned bodies discovered near railway lines, including the one at Watloo. There are now at least five victims with eerily similar gravestones of violence.(The Citizen)
The community’s fear is now palpable. Women and families are asking: Am I next? Could my sister, my friend, vanish at dawn?
A mother in Eersterust asked during a vigil: "Why are women being targeted? How do we fight when the killer moves so close to home?"
The police have urgently asked the public for help: if you saw someone burning, burying, or dragging a body—or anyone acting suspiciously near train lines—call Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or tip-off anonymously via the MySAPS App.(SAPS)
This moment threatens to become a turning point. For Pretoria, for women’s safety, for justice.
