Illegal Foreigners May Soon Lose Access to SA Clinics – ANC’s Bold New Immigration Shift Sparks Debate

In a surprise move welcomed by many South Africans this afternoon, the African National Congress (ANC) is actively considering tightening the country’s immigration policies — a significant shift that places local citizens’ needs at the forefront of national planning.

The party’s motivation stems largely from growing concerns among South African women, especially those who frequently compete with undocumented foreigners for access to public services, such as hospitals and clinics.

Speaking on the matter, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, government spokesperson, stressed that South Africa’s citizens must come first. “It is in the national interest that our people — especially the most vulnerable — can access services without unnecessary hurdles,” she said.

The ANC’s proposed plan includes:

  • Overhauling immigration rules to reduce pressure on public systems

  • Tightening border control to prevent unchecked illegal entry

  • Prioritising locals for critical services such as healthcare

The porous nature of South Africa’s borders has long been a weak point, often blamed for the influx of undocumented immigrants. According to analysts, this has strained health infrastructure, especially in poorer provinces where state hospitals are already stretched thin.

Local women, in particular, have voiced frustration — saying they often endure longer queues and reduced care quality due to competing with illegal immigrants for medical attention. This has intensified calls for a "citizens-first" approach.

While the move has been hailed by many as overdue, others are concerned it may trigger xenophobic sentiment or conflict with South Africa’s reputation as a humanitarian and inclusive democracy. The ANC says it wants to strike a balance: protecting sovereignty while maintaining compassion.

A major public debate is expected in the coming months, as policy experts, civil society, and everyday citizens weigh in. Some believe it’s a necessary evolution, while others warn of the risk of exclusion and division.
