It was meant to be a normal Monday commute. Instead, it turned into a scene of smoke, screaming, and terror.

At around 6:55 AM on July 21, a Golden Arrow bus packed with early morning commuters was attacked with a petrol bomb at the intersection of Govan Mbeki and Duinefontein Road in Philippi, Cape Town.

One second, passengers were heading to work. The next—flames, broken glass, blood, and panic.

“I just heard a loud bang, and then flames exploded from the bus,” said a visibly shaken woman who was walking nearby. “People were screaming, bleeding… scrambling to escape.”

Eight passengers were injured, some by the explosion, others by shattered windows as they tried to flee the burning bus. Bystanders said the attackers used the dim morning light and nearby homes for cover before disappearing.

Golden Arrow spokesman Bronwen Dyke-Beyer confirmed the horror:

“This was a callous and extremely dangerous act. The fire was extinguished quickly, but the impact was deeply traumatic.”

And it wasn’t just one attack. A second Golden Arrow bus was also targeted shortly after 8:15 AM. Luckily, that fire was put out before anyone got hurt. Still, the message was chilling: This was deliberate. Coordinated. Meant to terrorise.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg acknowledged the event but admitted no suspects have been arrested and no criminal case has been registered—yet.

“Police are aware of an incident where a bus was set alight in Govan Mbeki Road this morning,” he said. “Please contact Metro Police or Golden Arrow for updates.”

So far, authorities haven’t given a motive. Whether it’s extortion, a syndicate attack, or something else—Cape Town commuters are left terrified and angry.

One mother who survived the ordeal said:

“I send my kids to school using these buses. What if this had been them? This country is becoming unlivable.”

Golden Arrow has long been targeted in similar attacks during taxi protests and extortion rackets—but this time, the violence struck deep during a routine Monday rush.

How many more buses must burn before someone’s held accountable? How many more commuters must bleed before the system steps in?

Until justice is served, Cape Town buses might carry more than just passengers—they carry fear.
